Dust
Alert in the Dental Lab
D uring the process of grinding and polishing work, sand blasting
investment material and dry trimming plaster, micro fine dust particles
are produced which conventional filter systems allow to escape back out
into the work environment. Every year more and more materials are
introduced to the market. That is why it is imperative to have a
superior dust extraction system which can handle all different dusts as
well as acrylic fumes. The most dangerous types of materials are
cobalt, beryllium, nickel and quartz. These materials are frequently
found used in the daily routine of most dental laboratories. Once the
micro fine dust gets into the lungs, it can have a fatal effect on the
human body resulting in conditions such as asthma, allergies, poisoning
or cancer. Medical studies in Europe confirm health is endangered with
individuals who work in poorly ventilated workplaces. The study "
Pneumoconiosis in Dental Technicians" by Professor of Medicine
Konrad
Morgenroth from the University of Ruhr in Bochum and Dr. Hartmat
Korenburger from the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt
Germany is conclusive evidence that a certain measure of caution
should be exercised. Micro dusts are the finest particles that can be
inhaled without restriction. They reach the deep air ways such as the
alveolar region and cause degenerative pathogenic tissue reaction, in
other words the dreaded Pneumoconiosis. That is why it is so important
to have an extraction system with enormous suction power which captures
the fine dust particles and leaves little chance of them escaping into
the workplace. There are guidelines and recommended limits of
concentration in the air of dust particles. Creating awareness in the
Dental Community of the dangers provides the impetus to explore and
research for the best answers. Some values to look for are two stage
filter systems offering a 99.9 % capture rate. Filter materials that
meet ZH/1487 and EN-60335-2-69 designations. The units should be tested
for dust category l ( health endangering dust with MAK values > 0.1
mg/m 3). And finally you should also consider noise levels of these
dust extractors when investigating your options. Source;

B redent's new Biotec Organic Wax System for Pressible Ceramics was
introduced in Cologne at the 2001 International Dental Show in April..
The Bredent Research Development Team have not only created an organic
wax but a whole system for predictable results in pressible ceramics.
There are five types of Biotec Organic Waxes that have good burnout
characteristics and leave no residual ash behind. There is remarkably
minimal shrinkage to ensure the height of accuracy and homogenous
castings. Easily carved, the shavings can be blown off effortlessly.
Next, the new Biotec Metal Ceramic Pontics MKBL-OG have no collars and
exhibit the same characteristics of the modeling wax. To compliment the
system, Isobre-Wax Separator is made from an organic base which
provides accurate separation of waxed patterns. Even in a dry state it
leaves an effective micro fine insulated layer that ensures the safe
removal of the waxed restorations. Another component of the system is
Biotec Wax Profile Sprues which are also organic with high
flexibility
and excellent burnout characteristics. The sprues exhibit minimal
deformity while remaining completely compatible with Biotec Modeling
Wax, thus ensuring clean sprue channels for the best casting results
for pressible ceramics. The final compliment to this system is Wax-lite
an alcohol free wax wetting agent that exhibits excellent flow
behavior, this allows the investment to reach the finest recesses of
the waxed pattern. Thus smooth homogeneous surfaces and clean occlusal
anatomy are achieved. This system will be available soon so place your
orders now to avoid delays. Contact us at Dent-Line at 1-800-250-5111

Attachment Advice
Question: Often times there is not
enough space
for proper aesthetics when placing a denture tooth over an attachment
housing in a cast partial. Can you recommend an attachment that
is
most suitable?
Answer: This is a common problem that
most of us
hope that we don't have to address. However there are a few attachments
we can rely on like Bredent's VKS-OC. It's a ball stud type
attachment
with an angulated arm that extends down and away from the crown. The
miniaturization of the standard 2.2 mm ball to 1.7 mm gives us the
first advantage. The second one is that the mini is available in a 30
or 60 degree angulation which allows us to adapt it to different tissue
configurations. Its lower position and angle ensures ample vertical
space while the miniature size creates more buccal, lingual and mesial
space. The attachment design should solve our problem. Source;

Trade News!
Visit us during Dentechnica in Montréal on
October 12th &
13th, 2001 at the Radisson de Longueuil. We will introduce twenty new
products from bredent as well as present a seminar in French on the
bredent attachments.
Dental Fear
Alleviated
Acupuncture eases dental fears; people have a million excuses for
not
going to the dentist but some actually suffer from an exaggerated
gagging reflex that makes dental treatment miserable. Now dentists in
Great Britain say acupuncture can help. Research published in the
British Dental Journal showed dentists who used acupuncture to stop the
gag reflex were able to perform standard dental treatments, such as
filling and extractions, on patients who other wise would have to be
sedated. These patients often avoided dental visits altogether because
of the discomfort and embarrassment associated with this condition.
Estimates suggest that half of all Americans will never seek dental
care for fear of going to the dentist. Experts say there are number of
different reasons people develop fears over going to the dentist. Source;

Today's Product
Oxide-Stop saves time on soldering, reglazing, rebaking or adding
porcelain. Apply bredent's Oxide Stop onto all polished metal areas and
during firing or soldering. It prevents oxidation and discoloration of
the metal. Afterward, the protective layer is easily removed with hot
water or steam, leaving the metal polished and virtually untouched. The
material essentially eliminates the chance of margin damage from
repolishing and is available in three variations; semi-precious,
silver-palladium and non-precious. For more information
